Into the Woods

Ceramics Exam question: Create a sculpture in the round using primarily the slab and pinch technique, inspired by the theme “Into the Woods”. The composition should utilize the principles, proportion, unity and balance and measure anywhere between 9” and 7” at its largest dimension

From my Artist’s Statement – “In the beginning, when I chose the question, I was going to sculpt a round bird made of two pinch pots with their mouths molded together and a pine tree as a hole through it to stress the theme and let air escape. I gathered references and sketched the finished product. However, when I started on the maquette, I realized the idea and the variations looked off from any angle. Dejected, I rolled the clay into a ball and started working on anything my hands wanted to. From this clay, I sculpted the final maquette, a princess with pine tree-like hair and dress with the latter made of an overturned pinch pot and the former including a small slab.”
