Honeybee

On the 20th of September 2020, I sent the image above to my friend group with the caption “remind me to finish this when I’m done my History and Math SBAs”

On the 30th of July, when I finished my last csec exam, I made the sketch a digital illustration within 3 and a half hours.

This is a honeybee girl made in a different style than I typically do. When painting digitally, I tend to make the lineart first and foremost, before the colour layers, then shading, then the final gradients and secondary shading. Honever, I realised that I am never truly satisfied with my lineart, so I made this by doing the colours, shading and gradients for each element one by one, without many lines. I particularly like the variations in textures, from the Gaussian blur in the background to the bleeding watercolour brush in the foreground hive, to the fuzz on the socks. I also like the look of the honey and the fact that I got to sneak in a colour dodge layer.  The main complementary colours are yellow and purple, and the reds and oranges make it warmer and more exciting

I have always loved drawing the interior and exterior of cozy European cafes, and was in the mood to do so once more. However, instead of depicting the usual jam-packed cafe filled with people who look comfortable and homely in a warm environment, I wanted to make a piece dedicated to detail. The layers of hatching and cross-hatching, the pen-scratched textures and detail, and the simple colour scheme is supposed to draw one’s eyes to the sheer detail put into every square centimeter of this piece. Really, this picture is a focus on neat, tidy lines and hatchwork
